The Role of the Birth Doula

Engaging the support of a Birth Doula significantly enhances the labor process, aiming to ensure a safe, memorable, and empowering birthing experience for expectant parents. With professional training in childbirth, I offer comprehensive emotional, physical, spiritual, and educational support to expecting and laboring individuals. My commitment is to wholeheartedly align with your wishes throughout the labor experience, fostering a sense of empowerment, confidence, and nurturance as you embark on your childbirth journey.

A Companion in Your Birth Journey

Irrespective of the type of birth you envision—be it a home birth, non-medicated hospital birth, medicated hospital birth, VBAC, or c-section—I am dedicated to being by your side throughout the entirety of your birth experience. While your care provider attends to your medical needs, my focus remains on you and even your spouse, delivering emotional, physical, spiritual, and educational support tailored to bring your baby into the world according to your vision.

Educational guidance encompasses answering questions, providing continuous support, promoting informed decision-making, offering prenatal education, preparing for labor, facilitating communication with healthcare providers, and planning for the postpartum period. I strive to empower expecting parents with knowledge and confidence throughout the transformative journey of pregnancy, childbirth, and early parenthood.

 

Labor Pain Management

Drawing on professional training, I am proficient in various pain-relieving comfort measures. From breathing techniques to relaxation methods, massage, acupressure, and varied laboring positions, my goal is to ensure your comfort throughout the birthing process.

 

Devoted Labor Assistance

During your labor and delivery, I will remain consistently close and attentive, offering unwavering support. While your healthcare team attends to multiple responsibilities, I am solely dedicated to your well-being, ensuring you receive personalized and focused assistance throughout the labor process. 

 

Continuous Support

 My commitment to educational support extends throughout your pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum period. You can reach out to me via email, text, or phone at any time, ensuring that you have a reliable source of information as you navigate this transformative journey.

I provide evidence-based information to help you make informed decisions about your pregnancy and birth. Whether discussing birthing options, interventions, or postpartum care, I ensure you have the knowledge to make choices aligned with your preferences and values.

 

Prenatal Education:

As part of my educational guidance, I offer resources and information on various aspects of prenatal care. This includes topics like nutrition, exercise, and relaxation techniques, promoting a holistic approach to your well-being during pregnancy.

 

Labor Preparation:

Leading up to labor, I equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary for a positive birthing experience. This may involve discussions on breathing techniques, labor positions, and pain management strategies to help you feel confident and prepared.

 

Communication Facilitation:

During prenatal visits, I facilitate open and honest communication between you and your healthcare provider. This ensures that your concerns are heard, questions are addressed, and you feel actively involved in the decision-making process.

 

Postpartum Planning:

Educational guidance extends into the postpartum period, covering topics such as newborn care, breastfeeding support, and emotional well-being. I strive to empower you with the knowledge and resources needed to navigate the early days of parenthood.

As situations arise, I stand beside you, offering objective, fact-based information to guide your decisions. Facilitating conversations with your care provider, I ensure you feel informed, comfortable, and confident in the choices you make for your birth and family.

 

By offering personalized educational support, my aim is to empower you with the information and confidence needed for a positive and informed childbirth experience.

A positive birth experience starts in pregnancy. As soon as you hire me as your doula, I am available to you at all times to answer your questions, address your concerns, and identify possible solutions when challenges arise.

Your labor support will include a doula that is available 24/7 from the time your contract is signed. Upon signing a contract, support investments will include:

  • A free consult before hiring me as your doula to meet and get to know each other.

  • Two prenatal visits - here we’ll go over your thoughts and desires for your birth, different laboring positions, pain coping strategies, how you see my role in your birth, and anything else! These visits usually last 1-2 hours.

  • One postpartum follow-up visit within the first couple of weeks with baby / 1-2 hour visit to discuss your birth and your recovery and answer any questions or concerns. We will keep touch via phone the first few days before scheduling the appointment. (I can do laundry, I can watch baby and any other kiddos while you shower/sleep/take some alone time, I’ll wash your dishes, I’ll sit with you and listen)

  • Continuous support- physical, emotional, and informational to you and your partner for the duration of your labor and birth -I will help you to hold and move towards the vision you’ve created for your baby’s birth during labor and delivery. I will join you either at your home or at the hospital, whichever you prefer and stay with you through delivery and 1-3 hours after.

  • free video consult before hiring me as your doula to meet and get to know each other.

  • Unlimited – 24/7 email/text/face-time and phone call support from your doula.

  • Two virtual prenatal visits - here we’ll go over your thoughts and desires for your birth, different laboring positions, pain coping strategies, how you see my role in your birth, and anything else! These visits usually last 1-2 hours. (Three visits in certain scenarios.) 

  • Continuous virtual support - emotional and informational to you and your partner for the duration of your labor and birth (from the onset of labor through a few hours postpartum) - I will help you to hold and move towards the vision you’ve created for your baby’s birth during labor and delivery.

  • At least one virtual postpartum follow-up visit within the first couple of weeks with baby / 1-2 hour virtual visit to discuss your birth and your recovery and answer any questions or concerns. We will keep touch via phone the first few days before scheduling the appointment.

  • Postpartum support immediately following birth for 1-3 hours after delivery to get you and your new baby settled in.

  • I am on call 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after your estimated due date.

  • One 90-minute prenatal massage therapy treatment.

  • Continuous support- physical, emotional, and informational to you and your partner for the duration of your labor and birth -I will help you to hold and move towards the vision you’ve created for your baby’s birth during labor and delivery. I will join you either at your home or at the hospital, whichever you prefer.

  • Initial breastfeeding/bottle-feeding support immediately after birth to help your baby. I will help you obtain a proper latch and encourage an establishment of breastfeeding and/or bottle-feeding.

  • Access to my Lending Library

  • One 60-minute postpartum massage therapy treatment.

  • At least one postpartum follow-up visit within the first couple of weeks with baby / 1-2 hour visit to discuss your birth and your recovery and answer any questions or concerns. We will keep touch via phone the first few days before scheduling the appointment. (I can do laundry, I can watch baby and any other kiddos while you shower/sleep/take some alone time, I’ll wash your dishes, I’ll sit with you and listen)

YOUR DOULA DOES

  • Support you giving birth, your way.

  • Provide emotional support to you and your partner.

  • Treat you respectfully and professionally at all times.

  • Provide you resources and information from evidence-based sources, at your request.

  • Make myself available to you and your partner for emotional and educational support during your pregnancy.

  • Commit to being available during your labor from the time you request my presence, until your baby is born, and you are recovering.

YOUR DOULA DOES NOT

  • Perform any clinical tasks. My role as a doula is to provide physical, educational and emotional support during your pregnancy and birth journey.

  • Speak to the staff on your behalf. I always seek to work alongside of your medical support team to give you the best birthing experience possible. I cannot speak on your behalf but will happily include them in any discussion we are having with you and/or your partner and encourage you to communicate your needs to your medical team.

  • Carry any biases or expectations to your birth Every birth experience belongs to the individual giving birth. I support and respect your birth decisions without judgment.
